The selection of the new head of the Israeli State Comptroller’s Office—a position whose mission is to uphold integrity and combat corruption—was anything but clean. Michael Rabello has joined the long list of Benjamin Netanyahu’s dubious and deeply problematic appointments.

If the newly elected state auditor, Michael Rabello If he were a reasonable person, he would have immediately announced that he would not accept the appointment once he saw the threats and overt pressure that had clouded the vote in the Knesset.
Rabello, however, is a longtime confidant of Benjamin Netanyahu, a sort of council member—who knows all the prime minister’s secrets and skeletons in the closet. He is just as corrupt and depraved as his employer.
The mere fact that he was willing to run as Netanyahu’s candidate makes him unfit for office, not to mention the way he secured the position. A future government with a different composition—if one is formed at all—should exert political and moral pressure on him until he resigns voluntarily. He was elected through criminal means.
Rabello’s nomination is further proof of Netanyahu’s unbridled audacity. In the current government, there are no longer any red lines that cannot be crossed; no norms that cannot be violated; no principles that cannot be swept aside.
Still Emperor Caligula, who, according to legend, appointed his horse, Incitatus, as a senator, would have thought twice about appointing the same animal as the empire’s comptroller. Netanyahu, however, would have done just that—at least symbolically.
Over the past year, Netanyahu has carried out a veritable spate of controversial and problematic appointments: David Zini to head the Shin Bet, Roman Gofman to head the Mossad, Doron Cohen as Commissioner of Public Service, and Shmuel Ben-Ezra as National Security Advisor.
Netanyahu is already thinking about the next election. If he loses, he will surround the new government with people—including key figures in positions of influence—who owe him a huge debt of gratitude, and whom he will be able to constantly remind of that fact.
The corruption surrounding the vote in the Knesset is outrageous. A scandal like this could only happen in a dictatorship. With an „overseer” like this, it might be better to abolish the institution altogether.
The stench surrounding this appointment stems not only from the fact that the new auditor has a personal relationship with the very person he is supposed to be auditing.
Rabello is 58 years old and has spent his entire career as a private attorney, achieving significant success through his connections with government agencies. He will serve as auditor until he is 65, after which he will return to the private sector. Why would he want to get into a conflict with the very ministries with which he may once again have business dealings in the future?
His rival for the position Józef Elron, a former justice of the Supreme Court, who has deliberately stayed away from any opportunity to earn money since his retirement last year.
He has no business interests, only his reputation. That is precisely why he is the kind of person Netanyahu and his ilk fear the most.
The prime minister has often been compared to „the head of a criminal organization.” The similarities are numerous. However, what happened in the Knesset on Wednesday publicly confirmed this interpretation.
The structure of the „organization” mirrors the classic mafia model: at the top is the Don, followed by the Underboss, then the Consigliere, and finally the rank-and-file members.
On Wednesday, the Don and the Underboss—that is, Netanyahu and the Speaker of the Knesset, Amir Ohana – we were able to see how it works.
Ohana ignored the recommendation of the parliament’s legal advisor to ban the use of cell phones in voting booths. This would have been necessary because Likud lawmakers were openly instructed to record their own votes on video.
We have already discussed the role of the Consigliere. The duties of the Underboss are carried out by the coalition president, Ofir Katz was carried out by the person who reviewed the video recordings made by the compliant representatives.
Several Likud lawmakers have publicly complained that Netanyahu is trying to exclude Mizrahi politicians from the party’s next electoral list.
Nevertheless, those same people voted for the Ashkenazi candidate Rabello instead of the Mizrahi candidate.
David Amsalem for example, just a few minutes after he said:
„Not all Ashkenazi Jews are racist, but every racist is Ashkenazi.”
– On the orders of the Ashkenazi Netanyahu, he voted for the Ashkenazi Rabello.
That’s the kind of people our elected representatives are.
Some of them were so eager to prove their loyalty that they didn’t even turn off their phones in the voting booth. Some tried to handle the ballot and their phone at the same time, while others rushed straight to report to Katz.

In the past, Netanyahu tried to cover up his misconduct—which is how the cases that now form the basis of his corruption trial came about.
These days, everything is done openly.
Anyone who sees what happened in the Knesset as a harbinger of the upcoming election campaign is not mistaken. The process itself will, of course, be different, but the same lack of restraint, predatory exercise of power, corruption, and contempt for norms could jeopardize the integrity of the elections.
Jair Lapid His party, Yesh Atid, announced that it would appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing that the vote was unlawful.
This is yet another ticking time bomb for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Yitzhak Amit at the door.
Once the trial date is set, he is expected to speak out again Justice Minister Jariv Levin, Slomo Karhi, Minister of Communications and the others, claiming that they will not respect the court’s decision, whatever it may be, because, in their view, the Knesset has the final say.
In another, though not entirely unrelated, matter:
U.S. President Donald Trump On Wednesday, he confirmed press reports that he had called Netanyahu a „crazy bastard,” stating that „he’d be in prison by now if it weren’t for me,” and also said that „everyone hates Israel now.”.
This was literally the same as what Ravid Barak reported in Axios on Monday—a claim that Netanyahu’s office immediately denied.
The rebuttal itself is not unusual. What is noteworthy, however, is that commentators close to Netanyahu, such as Jakov Bardugo and Jinon Magal They also swore that no such conversation ever took place, that Trump didn't swear, and that Ravid is lying.
Then Trump himself spoke up.
Maybe he's lying too?
However, Netanyahu did not deny the story in a later interview on American television.
In other words, he lied to his own mouthpieces, who then spread the falsehood on his behalf, thereby making fools of themselves.
At least they've learned their lesson.
