While international news coverage of Palestine – and the Gaza Strip in particular – is dominated by dry statistics of geopolitical conflict, destruction and humanitarian crisis, for local communities the biggest struggle is the future – the mental and intellectual survival of their children. In this suffocating isolation, the British-founded Hands Up Project it is not simply an aid program for the Palestinians, but a cultural and psychological lifeline.
To understand what this initiative means from a Palestinian perspective, we need to examine the methodology in the light of local realities – blockade, trauma, and limitations on self-expression.
1. Breaking the physical and cultural blockade
Growing up in Gaza means that a young person has almost no chance to cross borders, see the world, or meet people from other cultures in person. In the West Bank, checkpoints and internal restrictions tear apart everyday life.
From a Palestinian perspective, the greatest value of the Hands Up Project is free interaction. Through online drama classes and storytelling, Palestinian students:

They enter into direct, human contact with foreign volunteers, teachers, and their peers.

They experience their voices reaching the outside world without being censored by political or military narratives.

Not as a passive victim, but as a creative artist appear on the international stage.
2. Drama pedagogy as collective therapy
Generations of Palestinian children are growing up amidst ongoing armed conflict, bombings and existential uncertainty. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety are common among schoolchildren in Gaza.
The methodology introduced by the project – in which children write and perform 5-minute plays in English themselves – from a Palestinian perspective art therapy. The stage (even if it’s just a small area in front of a webcam in a refugee camp) becomes a safe space. There, children can act out their fears, process their losses, or simply escape reality into a world of fantasy. When a little girl from Gaza talks about a bird that flies freely across borders in a play she wrote, it’s not just a language exercise, but an articulation of a desire for freedom.

3. Taking control of the narrative
In Palestine, education and the preservation of culture are essential for national identity and resistance (sumud – perseverance). Palestinian society highly values knowledge and intellectual achievement.
The Hands Up Project gives young people the opportunity to they tell their own stories. Instead of being talked about by Western media or political elites, the children present their reality in their own words, through their own dramas: the difficulties of going to school every day, the importance of family, friendships and their hopes. Having their plays published in book form in London or performed by theatres abroad gives immense pride and dignity to the community.
4. Challenges and the reality of war
From a Palestinian perspective, running the project is a constant logistical and human warfare. Since the destruction of Gaza's infrastructure, daily work has become almost impossible:

Online classes are interrupted due to constant power outages and lack of internet connectivity.

The local Palestinian teachers are themselves refugees, struggling to survive in tent camps.
Despite this, the Palestinian coordinators and teachers of the Hands Up Project continue their work among the ruins, in the shelters. Because from a Palestinian perspective, the children picking up pens, learning English, and performing drama on the boards that represent the world is the purest form of peaceful resistance: proof that the human spirit and faith in the future cannot be broken even under the most severe blockade.
