On the Brink of Diplomatic Isolation: Israel's Political Crisis and the Price of "Doublespeak"

The events of the past 48 hours have pushed Israel's international standing to new, unprecedented depths. As the Middle East region struggles to uphold a fragile US-Iranian-brokered ceasefire, Israel's internal political dynamics are eroding its own diplomatic space.

Internal sabotage as a government strategy

Israel's foreign policy is currently defined by an invisible but all the more devastating fault line: the gap between the pragmatic - albeit increasingly cornered - government line represented by Benjamin Netanyahu and the openly provocative, far-right rhetoric of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Nothing shows the gravity of the situation better than Ben-Gvir's immediate reaction to the deaths of the four Israeli soldiers. The minister openly incited violence in his post on X:

„"For every tear of every Israeli mother, a thousand Lebanese mothers must cry"” – wrote the Minister of National Security, adding that in his opinion „"All of Lebanon must go up in flames"”.

This statement is not just an emotional outburst, but an undertaking of a policy of collective punishment that directly contradicts the international agreements signed by the Israeli government.

When Ben-Gvir speaks of „burning Lebanon” in the shadow of a barely-established ceasefire, it is not just an emotional outburst. It is a conscious political message that works in two directions:

  1. Towards the radical base: It will empower voters who see diplomacy as weakness and military destruction as the only viable option.

  2. To the international community: It conveys the message that Israel's leadership is divided and that extremists within the government are capable of overriding international commitments at any time.

The breakup of the European Union

The case of Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, with whom Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar broke off all relations, highlights a dangerous trend: to the withering away of diplomatic channels. When Israel punishes a top EU diplomat on „apartheid charges,” it not only isolates Kallas but also removes the European Union itself from the negotiating table. This move is strategic suicide in the long run: Israel needs European mediation in future dialogue with Iran, but the EU is increasingly unwilling to assist the policies of a state whose ministers openly incite violence.

The trap of „collective punishment”

Such an extension of the principle of „an eye for an eye” – „the cry of a thousand Lebanese mothers” – is morally and legally unacceptable for the Western federal system. This rhetoric is a direct breeding ground for the aspirations of the Hague Group and provides a legal basis for countries that are calling for trade sanctions against the state of Israel.

Summary: Unsustainable condition

The Netanyahu government's strategy of tolerating all forms of extremism in order to keep the coalition alive has now reached its limit. Israel is fighting on the front lines in Lebanon and Gaza, while also losing allies on the diplomatic front.

The government’s „double talk” – where one minister talks about a ceasefire and the other talks about burning – cannot be sustained indefinitely. The international community’s patience has run out. If the government is unable to develop a unified, responsible position, Israel could find itself in a diplomatic isolation from which it could take years to recover, even after ceasefires are reached.
