On the night of June 9, unknown assailants set fire to agricultural fields around Taybeh, near Ramallah. The attack is not an isolated incident: the West Bank village—home to one of the world’s oldest Christian communities still in existence today—has been a target of settler violence for years.

Historical heritage in flames

Taybeh, one of the last predominantly Christian villages in the occupied West Bank, has deep historical roots. It is home to the 5th-century Church of St. George, one of the oldest active religious centers in the Christian world. The village is currently home to about 1,300 Palestinian Christians, who have preserved their community for centuries amid the region’s political turmoil.

The arson attack on June 9—during which the village’s farmland was engulfed in flames—is part of an escalating wave of violence. According to reports from local residents, acts of vandalism have occurred on several occasions in the village in recent times:

  • Arson of motor vehicles within the village.

  • St. George's Church and the cemetery next to it vandalism and previous arson attempts.

  • Threatening messages and graffiti on the village walls.

The growing tension stems from the presence of newly established Israeli settlements in the immediate vicinity of the village, which, according to local residents, has drastically altered the village’s security situation.

UN Report: In the Wake of Structural Violence

According to UN data, settler violence in the West Bank is showing an alarming trend. Based on the international organization’s statistics, in 2025, seven Palestinians lost their lives in attacks carried out by Israeli settlers, and more than 800 were injured, representing a 130% increase compared to the previous year.

According to an analysis by UN human rights bodies, this phenomenon cannot be viewed merely as a series of individual crimes. The international community considers the role of the Israeli authorities to be crucial:

  1. Financial support: Government funding for settlement movements.

  2. Military defense: The presence of the military, which in many cases either passively observes or actively supports the settlers’ actions.

  3. Impunity in the justice system: The failure of the authorities to hold perpetrators accountable, which in practice encourages them to commit further acts of violence.
