The report of the Palestinian Journalists Union (PJS) published on 8 June 2026 is not just a statistic, but an indictment of the passivity of the international community. Press freedom in the Palestinian territories has sunk to an intolerable level by 2026: for reporters working on the front lines, pen and camera are no longer protection but a life-threatening target.
„Targeted silencing” – The May balance sheet
According to PJS documentation, 55 serious violations against journalists were recorded in May 2026 alone. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)'s previous annual reports also confirm that these actions are an integral part of the occupation strategy, which seeks to completely prevent the "documentation of reality".
-
The toolbox of physical violence: The report reports 2 gunshot wounds and 5 direct shots. According to IFJ security protocols, wearing „press” vests should in theory provide a guarantee of safety, but in practice in the Palestinian conflict zone these devices often facilitate identification and attack.
-
System-level obstruction: The arbitrary detention documented in 30 cases and the systematic confiscation of media devices are clearly part of the „digital blockade” by which the authorities prevent the immediate sharing of on-site footage on the world wide web.
The global tragedy behind the statistics
According to the PJS, 262 Palestinian journalists have been killed since October 2023. This figure alone exceeds the number of press victims in most 21st century armed conflicts. The UNESCO press freedom guidelines and the UN Security Council Resolution 1738 (which is intended to ensure the protection of press workers during armed conflicts) are apparently not being enforced on the ground.
„The Israeli authorities” policy is to restrict journalistic work in order to prevent the documentation of violations on the ground.” – the union said in a statement, which international observers are increasingly describing as a „systematic silencing.”.
International legal background and the issue of responsibility
International humanitarian law – especially Article IV of the Geneva Conventions – treats war correspondents as civilians who are prohibited from being attacked. PJS has issued an urgent appeal to the UN Human Rights Council (OHCHR) to:
-
Independent investigation committee set up to investigate targeted attacks on journalists.
-
Sanction those commanders, who have been proven to have ordered or authorized violent actions against journalists.
-
Provide a protection mechanism unhindered access to conflict zones for media personnel, including special protective equipment.
Why is this important to the global public?
Attacks on Palestinian journalists have a direct impact on global public opinion. When the silencing of witnesses on the ground is successful, the world is caught in the grip of disinformation and controlled narratives. The erosion of press freedom is not a Palestinian internal matter: it is a global security risk that undermines the very foundations of negotiated settlement of international conflicts.

Editor's note: The figures for June 2026 (262 deaths since October 2023) highlight that the current international toolkit for press protection is ineffective in the face of systematic violence on the ground. The international community has a responsibility to go beyond mere statements and take practical steps to ensure the physical safety of media workers.
