The Israeli army has already expanded its control over Gaza by 11 percent beyond the „Yellow Line,” going beyond the terms of the „ceasefire.”.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the Israeli military to expand its control over the Gaza Strip to 70 percent, according to comments broadcast by Israeli media.
„Currently, we fully control 60 percent of the territory of the Gaza Strip… and my instruction is to reach… 70 percent,” Netanyahu said in a recording recorded by Channel 12 and broadcast on Thursday.
When someone in the audience shouted that Israel should occupy the entire besieged enclave, the prime minister said, „We’re moving in order,” The Times of Israel reports. „First 70 percent,” he said, without denying that a full takeover could occur. „We’ll start with that.”
The Israeli military quietly sent maps to aid agencies in mid-March showing that it had already extended its control beyond the so-called „yellow line,” which marks the boundaries of the enclave areas occupied by Israeli troops. This line was agreed upon under a U.S.-brokered „ceasefire” in October 2025. This meant that it controlled 64 percent of Palestinian territory instead of 53 percent.
The Israeli military occupation has cut off Palestinian access to about two-thirds of Gaza. Further occupation of the territory would force two million people, already living in dire conditions, into an even smaller area after enduring two years of genocidal war.
Despite a nominal ceasefire last year, Israeli bombardment of Gaza continues almost daily. Al Jazeera has recorded at least 2,400 Israeli violations between October and April. Earlier on Thursday, health authorities said an Israeli airstrike had killed at least 10 people, including four children, and wounded 20 others.
The latest report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says the humanitarian situation for civilians in Gaza remains critical, with displaced families living in overcrowded tents, schools or damaged buildings. Clean water is scarce and poor waste collection increases health risks, including the spread of rats and insects. The report says many neighborhoods in Gaza remain dangerous, with frequent airstrikes, artillery attacks and gunfire in or near residential areas.
Last week, the US-backed Gaza Peace Council overseer, Nickolay Mladenov, warned that the deteriorating status quo in the enclave could become „permanent.” In a speech to the UN Security Council, he urged the international body to use „every tool at its disposal” to pressure Hamas to disarm and Israel to abide by its October ceasefire commitments, citing ongoing killings and restrictions on humanitarian access.
The war, launched by Israel following attacks by Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has killed more than 72,775 Palestinians. The Israeli military continues to maintain a tight security regime, and hundreds more have died in the past seven months. Conflict observers warn that since the US-Israeli war against Iran began in February, Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip has accelerated.
