The economic, social, and structural unsustainability of communist systems was not due to isolated missteps, but stemmed from the theoretical and practical structure of the system itself. Based on history and political economy, the following are the main reasons behind their collapse:
1. The Absence of a Market and Private Property (The Problem of Economic Calculation)
In a capitalist economy, prices are determined by supply and demand, and prices convey information: they indicate what is in short supply and what is in abundance.

4. Inflexibility and a Lack of Innovation

In the communist planned economy, there was no competition; neither bankruptcy nor market demands compelled the state-run behemoths to improve quality. While the Western world was undergoing a revolution in information technology and consumer goods, the Eastern Bloc’s heavy industrial structure remained outdated and inflexible, unable to keep pace with the demands of the modern age.
5. Unsustainable financing
To an outside observer, communist states may have long appeared stable due to free healthcare, inexpensive staple foods, and guaranteed jobs (unemployment within the system). However, this social safety net was not based on real economic performance, but rather on the depletion of natural resources and, ultimately, on the indebtedness resulting from Western loans was based on. When the loans ran out, the systems collapsed like a house of cards.
Communism proved unviable because it ran counter to the fundamental logic of human nature—the desire for freedom, the right to property, and individual motivation—and sought to control the economy based on political ideologies rather than on mathematics and the laws of the market.
