The UN accuses Hamas of obstructing aid and endangering the safety of workers, but the group denies this and defends its actions.

A UN official has accused Hamas of obstructing humanitarian operations in Gaza and putting aid workers at risk - a charge the Palestinian group rejects.

„Humanitarian workers were forced to halt food distribution after gunmen linked to the de facto authorities forcibly entered the Abu Rashid food distribution point in Jalaliyah, northern Gaza,” Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN’s deputy special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, said in a statement on Monday.

He said the gunmen broke into the World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse and assaulted two truck drivers who were delivering humanitarian aid.

According to Alakbarov, „these incidents are not isolated” and „reflect an increasingly dangerous pattern of intimidation, violence and obstruction, including smuggling attempts and the targeting and abuse of humanitarian operations.”.

Hamas, which controls parts of Gaza, has strongly denied the allegations.

„We categorically reject the language of incitement, distortion of facts, and fabricated narrative presented in the statement,” the group said in a statement.

The group said the WFP distribution center was not attacked or raided, but was the site of an „official law enforcement operation” carried out after contraband was discovered „hidden in humanitarian aid packages.”.

They added that a unit of the Palestinian police had uncovered an attempt to use humanitarian convoys to smuggle cigarettes and mobile phone displays for commercial purposes.

„The police intervention in this incident was a responsible government action, with the fundamental aim of preserving the independence, integrity and neutrality of humanitarian action,” the group said.

The UN official warned that Hamas's actions continue to hinder the delivery of life-saving aid at a time when civilians across Gaza are facing severe hardship.

Last October, the two sides agreed to a US-brokered „ceasefire,” which Israel has consistently violated. Although the intensity of the fighting has decreased, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed and more than 3,500 wounded since the „ceasefire” went into effect. At least four Israeli soldiers have also been killed.

In total, more than 73,000 Palestinians died in the war.

Negotiations to move to the second phase of the US plan to end the war have been stalled for months. The plan would have required Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its forces from Gaza. Neither has happened so far. Instead, Israel has expanded its control of Gaza to more than 60 percent, up from the 53 percent required under the first phase of the deal.
