If we browse the mainstream Western press or follow the reports of major news agencies, we regularly encounter a recurring complaint from Zionist and Israeli government circles: „The international media is biased against Israel and supports the Palestinian narrative.” This claim has now become one of the most important shields of hasbara. If the public can be led to believe that the press is inherently biased, then any factual reporting, UN report, or human rights analysis exposing the crimes of the Israeli state can be immediately dismissed as „anti-Semitism” or „bias.”.
But what do structural analyses show? Is the media truly anti-Israel, or are we faced with a brilliantly constructed victim narrative designed to mask real oppression?
Linguistic asymmetry: How does the passive structure dehumanize?
Media bias is mostly not in outright lies, but in in the subtle asymmetry of linguistic formulations caught red-handed. If we examine the leading Western newspapers (e.g. The New York Times, BBC, CNN) headlines, a clear pattern emerges in the naming of the perpetrator and the victim:
