In modern political discourse, the concept of antisemitism has found itself caught between two forces. On the one hand, the real, dangerous racism and ethnic/religious hatred present in the world have not disappeared; on the other hand, however, political lobbies and state PR strategies (Hasbara) have eagerly transformed the term into a rhetorical weapon with which they seek to silence critical voices.

The Antipropaganda.hu According to its principles, a genuine fight against antisemitism requires conceptual clarity. We can only protect Jewish communities from genuine hatred by firmly rejecting the use of the fight against racism to serve political and colonialist interests.

1. The True Definition of Anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitism is hatred, prejudice, and discrimination directed against Jewish people as individuals or against the Jewish community as a religious, ethnic, or cultural group. Its historical roots range from medieval religious anti-Judaism to the pseudoscientific, race-based theories of the 19th and 20th centuries, which culminated in the tragedy of the Holocaust.

Forms of genuine anti-Semitism include:

  • Physical and verbal violence against people of Jewish descent or faith.

  • Vandalism of Jewish institutions, synagogues, or cemeteries.

  • The dissemination of classic tropes based on conspiracy theories (e.g., the „global shadow government,” or the secret control of the banking system or the media by a specific ethnic group).

These manifestations are the purest forms of racism, which every person of conscience, human rights organization, and independent analyst must condemn in the strongest possible terms.

2. The conceptual trap: Confusion with criticism of the state

The problem begins when the Israeli government and the international pro-Israel lobby deliberately expand this definition. In recent years (particularly following certain workplace examples from the IHRA—the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance), there has been a systematic effort to to equate criticism of the State of Israel’s policies, military actions, or Zionist ideology with anti-Semitism.

This methodological shift creates an extremely dangerous mechanism of censorship:

  • If anyone criticizes the military occupation of the West Bank, the apartheid system, or the blockade of Gaza, they are immediately labeled „anti-Semitic.”.

  • When a journalist or historian deconstructs the official hasbara myths surrounding the 1967 Six-Day War, they frame it as an attack on the Jewish people.

This strategy is morally untenable. Israel is a sovereign state with an army, a government, and a political system. No state can stand above international law and criticism simply because of the ethnic or religious composition of the majority of its citizens.

3. Why is hasbara harmful to Jewish communities?

When the propaganda machine portrays the Israeli government and the global Jewish community as a single, indivisible monolith, it is in fact reinforcing the most serious anti-Semitic trope: the misconception that all Jewish people in the world are collectively responsible for the actions of a single Middle Eastern state.

In reality, Jewish communities and Israeli society are deeply divided. Prominent Jewish intellectuals (such as Ilan Pappé, Avi Shlaim, and Norman Finkelstein) and Israeli human rights organizations (such as B’Tselem and Breaking the Silence) are the most vocal critics of Israeli human rights violations. When the mainstream lobby labels these courageous Jewish voices as anti-Semitic, it becomes clear that the goal is not to protect Jewish people, but to maintain political power.

Summary

The Antipropaganda.hu The editorial board believes that truth and human dignity are inseparable. We cannot be credible in our portrayal of the disenfranchisement of Palestinians and the deconstruction of apartheid if, at the same time, we turn a blind eye to actual hate speech directed at Jews or any other minority.

There is only one way to avoid stigmatization and combat genuine anti-Semitism: the strict conceptual separation. Religion and the individual are sacred; political ideologies (such as Zionism), military regimes, and state propaganda, on the other hand, are legitimate subjects of critical analysis. Based on facts, UN resolutions, and international law, such criticism is not hate speech, but a search for the truth.
