The Hungarian parliament has passed a constitutional amendment that would remove Tam\u00e1s Sulyok, who was appointed under former Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n, from his position.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Hungarian parliament has approved a constitutional amendment to remove President Tam\u00e1s Sulyok from his largely ceremonial position, the latest move aimed at eliminating the power of figures linked to former Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n.<\/p>\n
The measure, passed on Monday by 139 votes to just six, would immediately end Sulyok's term in office and pave the way for parliament to elect a new president.<\/p>\n
Hungarians voted out right-wing nationalist Orb\u00e1n in April, and the new prime minister, P\u00e9ter Magyar\u2019s Tisza Party, won a landslide victory. The election result ended 16 years of rule by Orb\u00e1n\u2019s Fidesz party, which had brought much of the country under its control.<\/p>\n
Since his victory, Magyar has sought to erode that power, including removing the current president. The constitutional amendment also introduces judicial reforms, creates a body to investigate alleged financial abuses under the previous government, and imposes a 12-year term limit on lawmakers.<\/p>\n
Sulyok now has five days to sign the constitutional amendment passed by parliament. P\u00e9ter Magyar stated that parliament will initiate constitutional impeachment proceedings against Sulyok if he does not sign it.<\/p>\n
The President of the Republic and other members of Fidesz boycotted Monday's parliamentary session.<\/p>\n
Parliament elected Sulyok, a former president of the Constitutional Court, in February 2024. He was nominated to replace Katalin Nov\u00e1k, who resigned after granting clemency to a man convicted of covering up sexual abuse of children.<\/p>\n
But just days after P\u00e9ter Magyar\u2019s center-right Tisza Party won a two-thirds parliamentary supermajority in April, the new prime minister declared Sulyok \u201eunworthy of embodying the unity of the nation\u201d and demanded that he step down from office as soon as a new government was formed.<\/p>\n
In June, after the deadline to resign expired, P\u00e9ter Magyar called the president a \u201epuppet\u201d of Orb\u00e1n and promised to remove him and other officials who remained in office through constitutional means. Weeks later, he presented a reform program, dubbed \u201eOperation Clean Fire,\u201d aimed at introducing a new constitution, cleaning up state institutions, and creating an anti-corruption agency.<\/p>\n
Although the presidency is largely symbolic, he has the power to approve laws and send them to the Constitutional Court for review, raising fears that Sulyok could use his presidential powers to obstruct the Tisza Party's ambitious reform agenda.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
