A recurring element in Budapest's public life and press is that far-right and self-defined "anti-Zionist" narratives resort to eerily similar rhetorical devices when they seek to stigmatize Israel. Published in connection with the 31st Budapest Pride on June 27 \u201e"analyses"\u201d<\/a> \u2013 such as reports in some right-wing media outlets \u2013 attempt to confuse solidarity with the LGBTQ community with a kind of \u201eanti-Israeli terror support.\u201d But what is behind this tactical \u201ehasbara twist\u201d?<\/p>\n

The trap of false equality<\/h4>\n

The articles employ a classic \u201ehorseshoe theory\u201d: they equate activists expressing solidarity with Palestine with anti-Pride, far-right HVIM members. This editorial ploy is not intended to reveal real political differences, but to create a rejection of anti-Zionist arguments in the \u201ereasonable\u201d middle-of-the-road reader, who is \u201ebetween two fires.\u201d.<\/p>\n

The method is simple: by conflating the advocacy of Palestinian human rights with the far-right, anti-Semitic \u201eprotection of tradition,\u201d the authors of the article create the impression that criticism of the policies of the state of Israel is inherently \u201ehateful\u201d or \u201ebizarre.\u201d With this method, they attempt to banish the issue of structural oppression and genocide against Palestinians from public discourse as an \u201eextremist\u201d topic.<\/p>\n

The \u201eflag war\u201d as a symbol of distraction<\/h4>\n

The \u201ebattle\u201d over the rainbow flags on the Elisabeth Bridge \u2013 which the right-wing media is calling a \u201eflag war\u201d \u2013 is actually a textbook example of political distraction. While the public debate is debating whether a Pride flag is \u201ehazardous waste\u201d or not, the government and media networks can conveniently divert attention from the country\u2019s real problems (such as economic crisis management or structural reforms). The artificial confrontation of the \u201eanti-Zionist far right\u201d and the \u201cPalestinian solidarity left\u201d at Pride only serves the purpose of forcing society to fight not against common oppressive structures, but against the destruction of each other\u2019s symbols.<\/p>\n

Why a \u201eterrorist state\u201d?<\/h4>\n

The narrative aims to replace the term \u201eterror state\u201d \u2013 which activists use to describe the actions of the Israeli state in Gaza and the West Bank \u2013 with the adjective \u201eterrorist\u201d, thereby delegitimizing the criticism. The articles fail to acknowledge that slogans such as \u201eFrom The River to The Sea\u201d or \u201eNo more Genocide\u201d are not a protest against the Jewish people, but against an oppressive state structure. Criticism of the \u201eZionist occupation state\u201d is consistently framed by the media as \u201eanti-Semitic hate speech\u201d in order to exclude critics from the debate.<\/p>\n

Conclusion: A victim of hasbara logic<\/h4>\n

The article in question is not about Pride or freedom of speech. Its purpose is to portray standing up for the Palestinian people on the streets of Budapest as \u201etasteless,\u201d \u201eforeign,\u201d and \u201edangerous.\u201d This kind of disinformation is part of \u201ephobia marketing\u201d in Hungarian politics: it tries to make the reader believe, by building on the fear of the \u201eother,\u201d that anyone who stands up for the oppressed is necessarily an enemy of democracy.<\/p>\n

This is why the \u201eanti-Zionist\u201d movement must remain vigilant: we must not let the right-wing press force the issue of Palestinian solidarity into its own narrative. Solidarity is not a \u201ebizarre scene\u201d, but a fundamental moral obligation in an era where state terror and disregard for international law are the order of the day.<\/p>\n
