After Israel banned 150,000 Palestinians with valid work permits at the outbreak of the war, unemployment in the West Bank has reached nearly a third of the population. (Courtesy of the Qatousa family)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"6\">Conflict of interest<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">The article highlights a dark contradiction: while Israeli state policy severely punishes border crossings, the Israeli economy continues to demand cheap labor in construction, agriculture, and carpentry.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"8\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Menial work:<\/b> An estimated 60,000\u201370,000 Palestinians work in Israel without permits, often with their employers paying intermediaries or hiding them in vehicles to get them to their jobs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Exploitation:<\/b> These workers live in constant fear, exposing themselves to constant risk, while earning multiples of the average West Bank salary, which is essential to repay family loans and make ends meet.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\">Legal and human rights aspects<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">Human rights groups (such as ACRI) emphasize that police regulations do not authorize officers to use live ammunition against unarmed, non-threatening individuals who are clearly just looking for work.
