While the colorful images of Pride parades project a model of liberal democracy to the world, for members of the Palestinian queer community living in Israel, these events are symbols of hypocrisy. We examine the phenomenon of &quot;pinkwashing&quot; based on the writings of social activist Orwa Adam.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"5\">&quot;Two-faced&quot; liberalism<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Israel likes to position itself as the only LGBTQ-friendly haven in the Middle East. However, this narrative begins to unravel when Arab identity is brought into the equation. The question is simple: how can a country be both a \u201eparadise\u201d for the queer community and an oppressive power for the Arab minority?<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">The reality is that the state machinery selectively exploits LGBTQ rights:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"8\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">When to show the \u201eliberal face\u201d:<\/b> Pride marches and pride-based campaigns portray the country as a bastion of tolerance in the Western world.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">When reality is uncomfortable:<\/b> Issues of discrimination against Palestinian Arab citizens or the occupied territories no longer fit into this colorful narrative.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\">A minority within a minority<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/opinion\/2026-06-04\/ty-article-opinion\/.premium\/im-queer-and-palestinian-jerusalem-pride-is-not-my-celebration\/0000019e-933f-da93-a1df-f7bfde590000?link_source=ta_first_comment&amp;taid=6a21e76c5a86e70001c580e2&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawSXOBdleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETF1c1hoT29OS3luY1pLTXNzc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHt5zzTaO1aZPTRrRCNs7pt7mjc1fZAKXXP2wI7MxKASwGmrsnwrIOsqvoQV4_aem_R7_uY67N3Hc3bn59esE98g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Orwa Adam<\/a> The most vulnerable group are those at the intersection: LGBTQ Palestinians. They are the ones whose resistance the security services, exploiting certain conservative social norms, often try to break through with blackmail. This practice seriously contradicts the self-image of the \u201eenlightened state.\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"11\">The parade as a statistical experiment<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">Pride marches in Jerusalem are particularly tense, often coinciding with the often violent and nationalistic Flag Marches celebrating the \u201ereunification\u201d of the city. As the author of the article points out, in a truly free and inclusive country, there would be no need for such militarized security and cordoning off of a Pride march.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"13\">Conclusion: The real standard<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">A country\u2019s development is not determined by the visual aesthetics of its Pride parades, but by how it treats its most marginalized citizens.
