But is supporting military self-defense compatible with immediate peacemaking, and why is diplomacy silent about the roots of the conflict?**

Our analysis of the Saturday It was based on a review published in the journal.*

The Hungarian-Israeli diplomatic alliance entered a new chapter on Monday, after Foreign Minister Anita Orbán strongly condemned regional attacks on Israel in a post on the X (formerly Twitter) platform. Maya Kadosh, Israel’s ambassador to Budapest, responded almost immediately to the statement, expressing her gratitude on social media for Hungary’s „solid support.”

While at the level of diplomatic protocol, the exchange of gestures may be considered routine, for analysts of political communication and international relations, the two statements are a textbook example of how modern political framing and selective narrative construction work during a global crisis.

### Asymmetric Framing: When Escalation Happens „By Its Own Self”

The number one characteristic of the Hungarian Foreign Minister’s position is decontextualization, that is, the removal of events from historical and military causal relationships. *„Hungary is following the dangerous escalation of developments in the Middle East with great concern,”* begins Anita Orbán. This formulation presents the spiral of violence as if it were an inevitable natural disaster, regardless of the state decisions, military blockades or targeted liquidations of the preceding weeks.

The statement precisely names the aggressors – Iran, Lebanon, Yemen, and the perpetrators of the terrorist attack in central Israel – but in doing so narrows the focus of the conflict exclusively to the actions of external, anti-Israeli actors. From the perspective of critical analysis, this technique obscures the humanitarian catastrophe taking place in the region and the issue of civilian casualties suffered on the other side, making the diplomatic position morally one-sided.

### The Basics of Hasbara: The Unassailable Argument

The core of the foreign policy response is built on the most important cornerstone of the official Israeli PR strategy, the so-called *hasbara*: *"Hungary stands by Israel's right to protect its citizens."*

This proposition is unassailable in international law and moral terms, since the protection of one’s own population is the fundamental duty of every sovereign state. However, critical reflection points out that diplomacy thus distracts attention from the *method* of defense. Hiding behind the „right to self-defense,” the international community tends to legitimize disproportionate military responses, which often further deepen the humanitarian crisis. Ambassador Maya Kadosh’s quick expression of gratitude is therefore of paramount importance: the goal of the hasbara ecosystem is to demonstrate that there is a solid Western/European diplomatic consensus behind armed responses.

> **„We thank Foreign Minister Anita Orbán for standing firmly with Israel in these difficult times.”** – Ambassador Maya Kadosh, Facebook

>

### Rhetorical paradox: Self-defense or de-escalation?

The latest twist in the Foreign Minister's post carries an internal political-logical contradiction. The text simultaneously supports Israel's self-defense (in practice: military retaliation) actions, while *"calling for a return to negotiations to ensure de-escalation as soon as possible"*.

In light of current military doctrines in the Middle East, it is not possible to support armed responses and demand de-escalation at the same time. The logic of military deterrence leads to a deepening of the conflict and the opening of new fronts, not to a return to the negotiating table. This point in the statement clearly shows the limits of diplomatic discourse: loyalty to the alliance requires military support, while international norms also require a commitment to peace – even if the two conflict.

### The double standard of Hungarian foreign policy

We cannot ignore the domestic context either. For years, the Hungarian government has represented the most pro-Israel axis within the European Union, which stands in sharp contrast to its approach to other geopolitical conflicts.

While the Budapest cabinet is promoting an unconditional, immediate ceasefire, a halt to arms shipments and the logic of a „peace camp” on the European stage (for example, in the context of the war in Ukraine) – rigidly rejecting the legitimacy of military responses – it is giving the green light to state military action in the Middle East. This structural double standard is a pure manifestation of geopolitical realism: strategic and ideological interests always override principles that are considered universal.

### Summary

The exchange of messages between Anita Orbán and Maya Kadosh is not about a nuanced analysis of the Middle East reality. It is a classic **act of solidarity diplomacy**, aimed at strengthening the political alliance and providing international cover. The selective use of language effectively sharpens the focus on the threats to Israel, while completely obscuring the complex dynamics of the region – reinforcing Budapest’s place in the camp of unconditional allies.

Budapest nem változtat az irányvonalon: a legújabb közel-keleti feszültséghullám kapcsán is a feltétel nélküli Izrael-párti retorika érvényesül.
