Experts,<\/span> aid organizations and the <\/span>The New York Times<\/i> According to visual evidence gathered by [the organization], the Israeli military used white phosphorus\u2014an extremely harmful incendiary agent\u2014over populated areas in Lebanon during its fight against Hezbollah.<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>The Times<\/i> In social media footage verified by the organization, the characteristic smoke trails from the ammunition were visible on May 30 in the city of Nabatieh, which has a population of about 40,000.<\/span> The photos were taken at that time,<\/span> when Israeli forces captured one of the area\u2019s landmarks,<\/span> Beaufort Castle.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does this affect civilians?<\/b> According to the World Health Organization (WHO), white phosphorus causes severe burns,<\/span> if it comes into contact with the skin.<\/span> If inhaled, it may cause damage to the respiratory tract and eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eThe damage,<\/span> caused by white phosphorus,<\/span> \u201dhorrible,\" said Bonnie Docherty,<\/span> a senior arms expert at Human Rights Watch.<\/span> \u201eIt causes burns,<\/span> that penetrate right down to the bone.<\/span>\u201dThe thick smoke,<\/span> which it produces,<\/span> \u201eIt causes severe respiratory damage and organ failure.\u201d.<\/span> The wounds may flare up again,<\/span> when the bandages are removed,<\/span> and the remaining material comes into contact with oxygen.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201eTheir destructive effects\u2014such as causing fires or severe burns\u2014are viewed as side effects of their use, rather than the main reason why an army employs such weapons,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Although white phosphorus is legal as long as it is not intentionally used in populated areas, it is often difficult to determine whether its use was intentional. \u201eThese munitions are not precision weapons, and they cannot distinguish between civilians and soldiers,\u201d Zwijnenburg said. \u201eIt may not be a banned weapon, but we know that armies do not always use it as intended.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Israeli military is not the only military force to use white phosphorus in combat. The United States has used it in several operations in the Middle East, including in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004, and in its 2017 campaign against ISIS in Syria. Ukraine and Russia have also accused each other of using white phosphorus since 2023.<\/p>\n

It is difficult to determine whether white phosphorus was intentionally used against civilians. A 2009 report by Human Rights Watch found that the Israeli military had used these munitions on multiple occasions in densely populated areas of Gaza.
