The The Intercept According to an investigative report published today, Israeli security services are systematically blackmailing gay Palestinians who have fled to Israel to escape domestic violence and homophobia, in order to recruit them as informants.

According to human rights advocates, the revelation deals a serious blow to Israel’s international image, which positions the country as the region’s sole LGBTQ+ safe haven.

An administrative trap instead of a refuge

Members of the Palestinian LGBTQ+ community face extremely complex forms of oppression: in conservative Palestinian society, homosexuality is often met with family ostracism, physical violence, or so-called „honor killings,” forcing many to flee to Israeli-controlled territories or Israeli cities.

However, based on the accounts of victims interviewed during the investigation, Israeli intelligence (particularly Shin Bet) exploits this vulnerability as leverage. The recruitment mechanism relies on the following methods:

Forced out (Twist): Intelligence officers threaten refugees that if they do not cooperate and provide inside information about Palestinian communities, they will inform their families and communities of their sexual orientation. In conservative and religious communities, this is tantamount to a direct threat to their lives.

Revocation of essential permits: If asylum seekers refuse to cooperate, the authorities exert pressure on them by revoking their residence permits, work permits, or even the permits required to access healthcare.

This method is nothing new: „Pinkwashing” and Realpolitik

Human rights organizations have long accused Israeli authorities of using the promotion of progressive LGBTQ+ rights as a PR tool on the international stage—a phenomenon that critics „pinkwashing”—as it is called—while in the occupied territories, security agencies are guided by realpolitik and military interests.

The background of this method is also historically documented. In 2014, the Israeli army’s elite cyber intelligence unit, the for the 8200 series 43 veterans and officers refused to serve in an open letter. At the time, they accused the regime of using intimate information gathered during the mass surveillance of the Palestinian population (such as sexual orientation, financial difficulties, extramarital affairs, illnesses) collected during mass surveillance of the Palestinian population were used as leverage to blackmail people into becoming informants.

Israeli authorities have traditionally rejected these allegations, stating that during intelligence and counterterrorism operations, they never systematically target individuals based on their sexual orientation, and that recruitment is conducted solely on the basis of national security considerations.

In any case, the evidence and witness testimonies that have now come to light are reigniting the debate at the intersection of security practices, intelligence ethics, and the protection of the human rights of vulnerable minority groups.

????
