He has been serving a life sentence in Israel since 2002, but even from behind bars, he exerts enormous influence on Palestinian domestic politics and the struggle against the Zionist narrative.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">In international diplomacy, human rights circles, and on the global left, Barghouti is often referred to as the <b data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"99\">\u201ethe Palestinian Nelson Mandela\u201d<\/b>. This parallel is no coincidence, and it highlights exactly why Israel keeps him hermetically sealed away:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"5\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">A supporter of the two-state solution:<\/b> As a member of Fatah (the more moderate Palestinian faction) and an elected representative of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), Barghouti has historically recognized the State of Israel within the 1967 borders, and has consistently advocated for a two-state solution and an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Only United Front:<\/b> In 2006, he launched the famous project from prison <i data-path-to-node=\"5,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"68\">\u201eNational Reconciliation Document\u201d<\/i> (the prisoners' document), which was signed by Fatah, Hamas, and other Palestinian factions. He is the only charismatic leader capable of bridging the political divide between Gaza and the West Bank.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The most popular Palestinian leader:<\/b> Every official Palestinian public opinion poll (for example, the <i data-path-to-node=\"5,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"92\">Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research<\/i> According to [his data], if a free presidential election were held in Palestine today, Barghouti would defeat both Mahmoud Abbas (the corrupt and unpopular president of the Palestinian Authority) and the leaders of Hamas by a landslide.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"7\">The Hasbara Narrative and the Stripping Away of Context<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">Israel and the mainstream Western media portray Barghouti exclusively as a \u201eterrorist convicted of multiple murders,\u201d citing the role he played during the Second Intifada (2000\u20132005), when he led the Al-Aqsa Martyrs\u2019 Brigades.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">The <b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"3\">Anti-propaganda<\/b> To provide context, the following facts should be included:<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"10\">1. The Illegitimacy of the Military Court<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">Barghouti was convicted by an Israeli civil court in 2004, but the proceedings were criticized by international legal experts and human rights organizations (including the <i data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"130\">Inter-Parliamentary Union<\/i>) was also described as a political show trial. During the trial, Barghouti <b data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"220\">refused to mount a defense and to recognize the jurisdiction of the Israeli court<\/b>, stating that an occupying power has no right to pass judgment on those fighting against the occupation.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"12\">2. The Mandela Parallel: The Evolution of the \u201eTerrorist\u201d Label<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\">Throughout history, colonial and apartheid regimes have, without exception, branded the leaders of freedom movements as terrorists.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"14\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Nelson Mandela<\/b> The South African apartheid regime also sentenced him to life in prison for leading sabotage operations and an armed uprising, and the U.S. officially kept his name on its terrorist watchlist until 2008 (!).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,1,0\">Zionist propaganda employs the same mechanism in Barghouti\u2019s case: it isolates the armed resistance from its root cause\u2014the illegal Israeli occupation and land expropriations\u2014in order to degrade the defense of Palestinian rights to the level of common criminality.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"16\">Why won't Israel set him free?<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17\">It is in Israel\u2019s strategic interest to keep Barghouti in prison. As long as he remains behind bars, the Palestinian Authority is led by Mahmoud Abbas, who is seen as weak and a collaborator, while Gaza is controlled by Hamas.
