Because they will undoubtedly be the next targets of the wave advocating white supremacy.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n A British-Palestinian couple I know takes part in the Nakbamarch to commemorate the more than 700,000 Palestinians who were driven from their homes en masse during the founding of Israel in 1948.<\/p>\n On their way to the march this year, something strange happened to them. On the subway, a couple sitting across from them clearly wasn\u2019t impressed by what they saw. My friend\u2019s wife\u2019s bag was decorated with Palestinian embroidery and pins bearing slogans such as \u201eFree Palestine\u201d , \u201eStop Arming Israel,\u201d and \u201eIsrael out of Gaza.\u201d.<\/p>\n The couple across from them stared at them but said nothing. One of them tried to take a picture of the badges, but couldn\u2019t get it to work. Two stops later, they stood up to get off, but before they left, one of them turned around and said, \u201eYou don\u2019t belong here. Go back to your own country!\u201d<\/p>\n After they left the car, there was great consternation among the passengers. An argument broke out, and it soon became clear that the people on the train sympathized with my Palestinian friends. They are NHS (British National Health Service) doctors who arrived from Jordan three decades ago. Both are Palestinians whose families come from Jaffa and Jenin.<\/p>\n The woman sitting to their right said, \u201eI\u2019m Irish. I know how you feel. We put up with this for 800 years; the British treated us like second-class citizens. They still see us as foreigners.\u201d Two Black British men sitting across from them laughed. One of them said, \u201eThey colonized the world for 200 years, and we\u2019re not going anywhere. We\u2019re staying right here.\u201d<\/p>\n When they reached the surface, my friends found that the streets from South Kensington all the way to Waterloo Place were packed with pro-Palestinian demonstrators. They had never seen such a large crowd during their time in Great Britain.<\/p>\n The number of pro-Palestinian demonstrators was significantly higher than the police acknowledged. The police and the media portrayed the presence of the two rival marches on the streets of London on Saturday as if two extremist groups had clashed. They also fabricated a smear story claiming that the pro-Palestinian demonstrators intended to march past a synagogue, even though this was never part of their plans or route.<\/p>\n The numbers, however, spoke for themselves. Tens of thousands demonstrated in support of Palestine, while supporters of the far-right agitator Tommy Robinson (whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) could barely fill Parliament Square.<\/p>\n The loud and prominent presence of British Jews\u2014both secular and religious\u2014was particularly striking at this year\u2019s Nakba Day march. It was far more problematic to be Jewish in the hate-filled arena of British fascists, for reasons that became immediately apparent as soon as anyone spoke up.<\/p>\n \u201eMen, are you ready to get in shape? Are you ready to become the best versions of yourselves? As men, as British men, we must prepare for battle, because a battle is coming to this country,\u201d Yaxley-Lennon barked.<\/p>\n Yaxley-Lennon gave a single interview to the Polish-American model Weronika Karagowska, who asked him what he would do if he were prime minister. He replied: \u201eI would stop Islam. I would put an end to foreign funding of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n Presumably, by \u201ecutting off foreign funding,\u201d he meant stopping or repaying the funds he had funneled to himself from the Philadelphia-based Middle East Forum, American billionaire Robert Shillman, the Australian Liberty Alliance, or the Jewish Defense League?<\/p>\n \u201eI would remove all migrants from the hotels, and the army would send them back tomorrow,\u201d Yaxley-Lennon continued. \u201eI would carry out a remigration. It\u2019s time for many Muslims to leave this country. It\u2019s time to go. You have your homes to go to. This is our home; we have nowhere else to go. We won\u2019t allow any more change\u2014you see, people have had enough, people have had enough.\u201d<\/p>\n Kellie Jay Keen, who describes herself as a \u201ewomen\u2019s rights activist,\u201d amplified this anti-Islam outburst: \u201eIt\u2019s not too late to purge Islam from our classrooms. It\u2019s not too late to purge Islam from that building. It\u2019s not too late to purge Islam from every government office in the country, and it\u2019s more than just not too late\u2014it\u2019s absolutely essential if we want to save this country: we must remove Islam from every single position of authority.\u201d<\/p>\n Yaxley-Lennon and Keen were rather awkward allies for the pro-Israel figures who funded this congregation. The tension with the Israeli lobby became fully apparent when Piers Morgan interviewed Jonathan Conricus, a former spokesperson for the Israeli army.<\/p>\n Conricus, who said he enjoyed his time in Parliament Square, defended Keen for calling for the removal of Islam from British public life. Conricus attempted to draw a distinction between Islam as a religion and Muslims as people who practice the religion. This distinction was refuted by Yaxley-Lennon himself, who openly called on Muslims to \u201ego home.\u201d.<\/p>\n Morgan rightly asked whether Conricus would say the same thing if the far right were to turn against Judaism. Conricus had no answer to that.<\/p>\n If we set aside the numerous Stars of David that appeared in Parliament Square, this was a gathering exclusively for Christians, promoting white supremacy. The White Vanguard movement\u2019s banner made this all too clear: \u201eEnd the British Zionist occupation. Stop the replacement of the white population.\u201d<\/p>\n The civilization these fascists had sworn to defend was clearly no longer \u201eJudeo-Christian\u201d\u2014whatever that term may mean. Throughout history, it was Christians who were the Jews\u201e most determined persecutors. Another banner read: \u201cF\u201dIslam, Christ is King\u201d (B<\/b> and Islam, Christ the King). This is a message that Amichai Chikli, Israel\u2019s Minister of Diaspora Affairs\u2014who invited Yaxley-Lennon to Israel last October\u2014certainly did not pay to have posted.<\/p>\n None of the speakers at the \u201eUnite the Kingdom\u201d march will be arrested or questioned for hate speech. This has made the inequality of the law\u2014which currently defines anti-Semitism and Islamophobic hate speech\u2014and, consequently, the difference in police protection for these marches, completely evident.<\/p>\n The legal definition of hate speech clearly does not apply equally to all British citizens. Anyone who had held up a sign making the same claim about Judaism would have been quickly arrested for anti-Semitism. But that is not the main danger of allowing such fascist marches, especially in front of the Parliament building.<\/p>\n This threat goes beyond the Palestinian conflict. It threatens every British citizen in this country, regardless of their ethnicity or country of origin. Today, it has become mainstream to attack all British Muslims, regardless of where or when they arrived.<\/p>\n Michael Gove, a former Conservative minister; Wes Streeting, a candidate for the Labour Party leadership; Yvette Cooper, former Home Secretary and current Foreign Secretary; Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party\u2014all of them played into the Islamophobic trope that Muslim communities are suspicious voters and harbors of extremists who must be treated as breeding grounds for terrorists. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke of the \u201ecumulative effect\u201d of pro-Palestinian demonstrations on anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n This generation of politicians is fond of reminiscing about those glorious days when Britain defeated fascism in the 1940s. Nevertheless, they all conveniently gloss over the role that Muslims played in defending Britain during the hour of greatest need in the fight against fascism.<\/p>\n At least 2.5 million Muslims fought on the side of the Allied forces in World War I, and 5.5 million in World War II. Nearly 1.5 million Muslims were killed in the fighting. Most came from India and Africa and fought in Somalia, Abyssinia, and Madagascar. Between 9,000 and 12,000 Palestinians fought for Great Britain in Egypt and Mesopotamia.<\/p>\n The largest Muslim contribution, however, came from the British Indian Army, which fought against the Japanese in the Far East campaign. One million Muslims served in that army. Their descendants are the very people whom politicians representing a wide range of mainstream political views are now telling that they are no longer British enough to remain in this country.<\/p>\n If Starmer fails to hold on to the prime minister\u2019s seat, the Labour Party will keep the left divided, and Britain\u2019s next prime minister will almost certainly be Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK. With Farage taking office, every Muslim in this country will have reason to fear.<\/p>\n Contrary to the slander that Jeremy Corbyn\u2019s leadership of the Labour Party has made Britain unsafe for Jews, it will indeed be true that, with Farage\u2019s rise to power, Britain will become unlivable for Muslims. As soon as they begin to emigrate, the Jews won\u2019t be far behind. For they will undoubtedly be the next targets of the wave of white supremacy that Farage represents in opposition to the presence of \u201eforeigners.\u201d.<\/p>\n By supporting the far right across the UK, Israel is putting the entire British Jewish community at grave risk.<\/p>\n My Palestinian friends returned home feeling strengthened by the support their families received from white, Black, and Asian people, Jews, and Muslims alike on the day they commemorated their families\u2019 expulsion from their lands.<\/p>\n The night before, my friend\u2019s wife called her aunt, who lives in Jenin. The aunt had survived a massive Israeli military operation aimed at dismantling the Jenin camp and displacing as many as 45,000 Palestinians. This time, her aunt was in despair. The settlers\u2019 white tents had appeared on their farmland northwest of Jenin. This could only mean one thing: the tents would become an outpost, and soon their farmland\u2014and their only source of income\u2014would disappear completely.<\/p>\n As everyone knows by now, the settlers control the West Bank.<\/p>\n \u201eThey tell us to go home. There\u2019s nothing I\u2019d like more than to go back to my family\u2019s home in Jenin. But we are here in Britain because we were driven from our land, and Britain is responsible for what happened in 1948 and what has been happening every day for the past 78 years.
