Anachronism and the Overriding of International Law<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">The basis of modern international law and diplomacy is the equality of sovereign states, the UN Charter, and existing international conventions.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"5\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The gist of the criticism:<\/b> When the official ambassador of a superpower defines his foreign policy doctrine by referring to a religious text that is thousands of years old (the Bible), he is putting the modern legal order in parentheses.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,1,0\">Critics say this approach sets a dangerous precedent: if biblical borders and divine promises become a legitimate reference point in modern diplomacy, it will make rational, compromise-based negotiations \u2013 such as the two-state solution \u2013 impossible, since the \u201edivine command\u201d cannot be negotiated.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"6\">2. Domestic political instrumentalization<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\">The ambassador&#039;s statement at Yeshiva University was addressed not only to the outside world, but also to the American domestic political market.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"14\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\">In the United States, evangelical Christians constitute one of the most important and disciplined voting bases of the Republican Party.
