Why are they unsustainable?

The economic, social, and structural unsustainability of communist systems was not due to isolated missteps, but stemmed from the theoretical and practical structure of the system itself. Based on history and political economy, the following are the main reasons behind their collapse:

1. The Absence of a Market and Private Property (The Problem of Economic Calculation)

In a capitalist economy, prices are determined by supply and demand, and prices convey information: they indicate what is in short supply and what is in abundance.

Under communism, where private property was abolished and the state owned the means of production, The real market has disappeared.

In the absence of actual prices, the central planning offices were unable to rationally calculate how much of each item should be produced. This inevitably led to the shortage economy It led either to its classic symptoms (long lines, shortages of goods, and a black market) or to the overproduction of unnecessary goods.

2. Eliminating Individual Motivation and Incentives

The fundamental driving force of a market economy is self-interest: better performance leads to higher income, recognition, or profit.

Communist regimes were based on the principle of equality (wage caps, collectivization), which they drained people of their personal motivation.

When hard work and innovation came to be valued no more than idleness, work efficiency and product quality began to decline dramatically. As a famous saying of the era went: „They pretend to pay, and we pretend to work.”

3. The „credibility gap” and totalitarian oppression

Since the economy was not functioning efficiently, a growing gap emerged between reality and official ideology, known as Credibility Gap ...was formed.

The one-party state’s propaganda machine constantly trumpeted reports of victories, the fulfillment of plans, and the „decline of the West,” while the population faced the suppression of civil liberties and poverty in their daily lives.

After a while, the system will only through brutal repression, it was able to sustain itself through censorship, surveillance by the secret police, and political terror. This moral and intellectual hollowness ultimately completely eroded social trust.

4. Inflexibility and a Lack of Innovation

The free market forces companies to compete: those that fail to innovate fall behind and go bankrupt. In the communist planned economy, there was no competition; neither bankruptcy nor market demands compelled the state-run behemoths to improve quality. While the Western world was undergoing a revolution in information technology and consumer goods, the Eastern Bloc’s heavy industrial structure remained outdated and inflexible, unable to keep pace with the demands of the modern age.

5. Unsustainable financing

To an outside observer, communist states may have long appeared stable due to free healthcare, inexpensive staple foods, and guaranteed jobs (unemployment within the system). However, this social safety net was not based on real economic performance, but rather on the depletion of natural resources and, ultimately, on the indebtedness resulting from Western loans was based on. When the loans ran out, the systems collapsed like a house of cards.

Communism proved unviable because it ran counter to the fundamental logic of human nature—the desire for freedom, the right to property, and individual motivation—and sought to control the economy based on political ideologies rather than on mathematics and the laws of the market.

A kommunista rendszerek gazdasági, társadalmi és strukturális életképtelensége nem egy-egy elhibázott döntésen múlt, hanem magából a rendszer elméleti és gyakorlati felépítéséből fakadt.
