The essence of the method is that the propagandist uses an institution, symbol, or authority figure that we already know, deeply respect, and accept transfers its authority, sanctity, and prestige a person, idea, or program that they want the public to accept.

The same principle works in reverse: the negative connotations associated with a universally hated or despised symbol (such as the flag of an enemy country or the image of a criminal) can be projected onto an opponent to elicit immediate rejection.

The Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA) emphasizes that this technique is almost entirely avoids verbal argumentation. It does not rely on logical arguments, but rather links ready-made, pre-packaged emotional reactions with new elements.

A Propaganda Critic Based on this analysis, the transfer most often occurs in three major areas:

1. Appropriation of religious symbols

Religion is one of the oldest and most deeply felt foundations of human culture. When a political movement or leader incorporates religious symbols into their campaign, it creates the impression that their agenda is backed by divine approval or transcendent truth:

The incorporation of crosses, sacred texts, church backdrops, or religious rituals into political rallies.

Rhetoric that frames political struggle as a cosmic battle between „good and evil” or „light and darkness.”.

2. Use of national and patriotic symbols

Symbols of national identity elicit an almost immediate and automatic emotional response from the audience. Propagandists are fond of cloaking themselves in these symbols to obscure rational debate:

Flags and national colors: When dozens of national flags are lined up behind a politician at a press conference, the visual message suggests: „Whoever attacks me attacks the homeland.”

Historical monuments and heroes: When a speech is delivered in front of a statue of a founding father, a national hero, or a historic site, the speaker unconsciously gives the impression that he is the spiritual heir to those great predecessors.

3. „Science” as a Modern Symbol of Authority

In modern, secular societies, science and objectivity have taken on the role of the supreme authority. Advertisers and political lobby groups therefore frequently employ this technique:

The effect of the white coat: When an actor in a white lab coat speaks in front of a microscope or complex graphs in a toothpaste commercial or a pharmaceutical advertisement, the viewer associates a sense of scientific precision and reliability with the product, even if they haven’t been given any actual scientific evidence.

Terms that sound technical: The use of words such as „clinically tested”, „statistically proven” or „backed by experts”, without specifying the research or methodology.

Mental Self-Defense: Questions About the Transfer Technique

Since transference relies primarily on visual stimuli and unconscious associations, manipulation can be counteracted by consciously separating images from their content. The IPA recommends the following questions:

What specific symbol, institution, or authority (e.g., religion, nation, science) is the propagandist attempting to exploit in their message?

Is there any real, legitimate, and logical connection at all between the venerable symbol used and the proposed political program or product?

If I strip away all the flags, religious references, ornate backgrounds, and white robes from the image, what remains of the proposal?
