A <\/span>Glittering Generalities<\/span><\/b> In the classical theory of propaganda analysis, the <\/span>Name-Calling<\/span><\/i> a perfect reflection.<\/span> While the purpose of stigmatization is to portray a good idea or person as bad and to prompt the public to reject it without evidence, the purpose of glittering generalities is to <\/span>to make a bad or vague idea appear good, and to have it accepted without scrutiny<\/span><\/b>.<\/p>\n

The essence of the method is that <\/span>\u201evirtue words\u201d<\/span><\/b> the use of which we associate with deeply rooted, positive emotional associations.<\/span> Examples of such words include: <\/span>Patriotism, Justice, Freedom, Science, Democracy, Peace, Progress, Family<\/span><\/i>.<\/p>\n

A Propaganda Critic<\/i> Based on a detailed analysis, the operation and risks of this technique are as follows:<\/p>\n

1. Why does it work? The Trap of False Consensus<\/span><\/h3>\n

These words sound great to everyone, but the catch is that <\/span>mean different things to different people<\/span><\/b>.<\/p>\n

If a politician <\/span>\u201edefending democracy\u201d<\/span><\/i> or the <\/span>\u201efreedom\u201d<\/span><\/i> When someone speaks, the listener automatically relies on their own interpretation\u2014learned from their parents, teachers, and surroundings\u2014and unconsciously assumes that the speaker thinks exactly the same way they do.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA)<\/span><\/i> According to his explanation, this mechanism <\/span>drastically reduces the audience's mental resistance<\/span><\/b>. Glamorous platitudes are a constant feature of political campaigns and the names of various lobbying groups\u2014after all, who could possibly dispute concepts like progress or peace?<\/span> Among other things, the website cites the following U.S. presidential campaign slogans as examples:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201eA Safer World and a More Hopeful America\u201d<\/i> (George W. (Bush & Dick Cheney, 2004)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    \u201eA Stronger America\u201d<\/i> (John Kerry & John Edwards, 2004)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    \u201eReform, Prosperity, and Peace\u201d<\/i> (John McCain & Sarah Palin, 2008)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This approach is also reflected in the names of political action committees (PACs), such as the <\/span>\u201eCenter for American Progress\u201d<\/span><\/i> or the <\/span>\u201eAmericans for Medical Progress\u201d<\/span><\/i>, where the name itself calls for a positive bias.<\/span><\/p>\n

    3. The Closest Relative: Superlatives<\/span><\/h3>\n

    The cousins of glittering generalities are the superlatives so familiar from advertisements and populist political speeches: <\/span>wonderful, amazing, fantastic, the greatest, marvelous, huge<\/span><\/i>. When a speaker uses these (e.g.,. \u201eWe have a truly grand plan\u201d), he has no interest whatsoever in elaborating on definitions or clarifying specifics; he is solely interested in the positive, reassuring emotional impact these words evoke.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Mental Self-Defense: Questions That Challenge Glib Generalizations<\/h3>\n

    If a message, article, or speech is conspicuously overloaded with lofty \u201evirtue words,\u201d the IPA methodology suggests that the manipulation can be exposed by asking the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n

      What does the term \"virtue\" actually mean, explained objectively?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      Is there any real, legitimate, and logical connection between a politician\u2019s or advertiser\u2019s specific proposal and the true meaning of the lofty term used (e.g., freedom, justice)?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    3. \n

      Isn\u2019t it possible that they\u2019re trying to \u201esell\u201d me an idea or a program that doesn\u2019t actually serve my interests at all, simply by giving it a name I like?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    4. \n
