If the public can be led to believe that the press is inherently biased, then any factual reporting, UN report, or human rights analysis exposing the crimes of the Israeli state can be immediately dismissed as \u201eanti-Semitism\u201d or \u201ebias.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">But what do structural analyses show? Is the media truly anti-Israel, or are we faced with a brilliantly constructed victim narrative designed to mask real oppression?<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"8\">Linguistic asymmetry: How does the passive structure dehumanize?<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">Media bias is mostly not in outright lies, but in <b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"64\">in the subtle asymmetry of linguistic formulations<\/b> caught red-handed. If we examine the leading Western newspapers (e.g. <i data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"170\">The New York Times<\/i>, <i data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"190\">BBC<\/i>, <i data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"195\">CNN<\/i>) headlines, a clear pattern emerges in the naming of the perpetrator and the victim:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"10\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">In the case of Israeli victims:<\/b> The language is active, direct and emotionally charged. <i data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"81\">\u201e&quot;Israeli civilians were murdered by terrorists&quot;\u201d<\/i>, <i data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"131\">\u201e&quot;Israeli children died in the attack&quot;\u201d<\/i>. The perpetrator (the Palestinian perpetrator) is always clearly named, and the victims are given a face and a name.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">In the case of Palestinian victims:<\/b> The language suddenly <b data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"49\">passive and objective<\/b> It becomes as if the deaths were natural disasters. <i data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"138\">\u201e&quot;Palestinians died in the explosion&quot;\u201d<\/i>, <i data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"178\">\u201e&quot;Thirty people lost their lives in Gaza&quot;\u201d<\/i>. The sentences systematically omit the subject of action: that the death was caused by an airstrike or artillery fire by the Israeli army (IDF).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">This linguistic technique \u2013 which was also fondly refined in Frank Luntz\u2019s PR manuals \u2013 results in the Western reader imagining the death of Israel. <i data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"162\">as a crime<\/i>, while the Palestinian death <i data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"203\">as an inevitable statistical data<\/i> or is precipitated as &quot;collateral loss&quot;.<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"13\">Systematic eradication of context<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">Another great weapon of the hasbara myth is the news. <b data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"45\">temporal decontextualization<\/b>. The mainstream media almost without exception begins to cover events intensively when there is armed resistance or retaliation from the Palestinian side.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15\">The news is silent about the everyday, structural violence of the months or years preceding this:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"16\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\">On the land seizures in the West Bank and the expansion of illegal settlements,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,1,0\">On the systematic demolition of Palestinian homes,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,2,0\">On the stifling economic and humanitarian reality of the Gaza blockade,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,3,0\">About the daily humiliations at military checkpoints.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17\">Because the media always starts the story with the Palestinian reaction, the brutal Israeli military action is automatically portrayed by the press as <b data-path-to-node=\"17\" data-index-in-node=\"131\">\u201e&quot;self-defense&quot;\u201d<\/b> or \u201eretaliation.\u201d In doing so, the real status quo\u2014the structure of military occupation and apartheid\u2014is rendered invisible.<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"19\">Institutional censorship and \u201eeditorial guidelines\u201d<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"20\">The institutional pressure going on in the background also refutes the myth of media bias. In large Western editorial offices (especially in the Anglo-Saxon world), strict internal guidelines regulate what words are allowed to be written.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\">Several leaked internal documents show that journalists at mainstream newspapers are banned or severely restricted from using internationally recognized legal terms such as <b data-path-to-node=\"21\" data-index-in-node=\"189\">\u201e&quot;occupation&quot;\u201d<\/b>, the <b data-path-to-node=\"21\" data-index-in-node=\"206\">\u201e&quot;apartheid&quot;\u201d<\/b>, the <b data-path-to-node=\"21\" data-index-in-node=\"222\">\u201e&quot;ethnic cleansing&quot;\u201d<\/b> or the <b data-path-to-node=\"21\" data-index-in-node=\"251\">\u201e&quot;genocide&quot;\u201d<\/b> \u2013 even when citing reports from the UN or Human Rights Watch. In contrast, official statements from the Israeli army are often taken and reported by the media as unverified facts.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"22\">Journalists who try to break with this one-sided framing take a serious career risk: Zionist lobby organizations (like the <i data-path-to-node=\"22\" data-index-in-node=\"157\">CAMERA<\/i> or the <i data-path-to-node=\"22\" data-index-in-node=\"171\">HonestReporting<\/i>) immediately launch smear campaigns against them, accusing them of anti-Semitism, which often leads to disciplinary action or dismissal.<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"24\">Why does hasbara perpetuate this myth?<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"25\">If in reality the media structure favors Israel, why does the hasbara claim otherwise? The answer is <b data-path-to-node=\"25\" data-index-in-node=\"106\">in the preventive defense mechanism<\/b> lies:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" data-path-to-node=\"26\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"26,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"26,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Discrediting criticism:<\/b> If the media is constantly branded as \u201eanti-Israel,\u201d the public becomes immune to shocking images and facts. <i data-path-to-node=\"26,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"155\">\u201eOh, the media is exaggerating and insulting Israel again\u201d<\/i> \u2013 thinks the manipulated reader.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"26,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"26,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Pressure on editorial offices:<\/b> The constant stream of complaints and accusations of \u201ebias\u201d forces editors to constantly prove their \u201eimpartiality,\u201d which in practice means adopting even more Israeli government narratives and hasbara panels without criticism.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"27\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"28\">The image of the \u201eanti-Israel media\u201d is a well-constructed illusion serving political purposes. The linguistic structures, the omission of context, and the editorial censorship serve to maintain and morally whitewash settler-colonial oppression to this day.
