Most recently, a representative of the Tisza Party was quick to assert that Hungary \u201emust be a friend of Israel,\u201d continuing a tradition that shapes foreign policy not on the basis of rational interests, but on an emotional basis.
\nIt is time to say it: this approach is misguided, short-sighted, and runs completely counter to Hungary\u2019s true national interest, which\u2014even in the Middle East\u2014should be based on balance, not one-sidedness.<\/p>\n
1. \u201eFriendship\u201d is not the same as the national interest<\/p>\n
In international relations, there are no eternal friendships, only eternal interests. When a Hungarian politician declares that our country must behave as a \u201efriend\u201d toward a Middle Eastern state that is constantly embroiled in regional wars, he voluntarily gives up Hungarian diplomacy\u2019s room to maneuver.
\nIt is not Hungary\u2019s role to take sides with one party or another in the conflicts of the Middle East, but rather to stay out of them and maintain its position as a mediator and advocate for peace.<\/p>\n
2. Human rights and the principle of Palestinian self-determination<\/p>\n
If Hungary truly stands on the ground of international law and justice, it cannot turn a blind eye to the decades-long tragedy of the Palestinian people and their legitimate aspirations for self-determination. Lasting peace in the Middle East\u2014which is also the key to Europe\u2019s security\u2014is inconceivable without a just, two-state solution to the Palestinian question.
\nThe suffering of Palestinian civilians, the humanitarian crisis, and the complicit silence regarding human rights violations are not only morally troubling but also undermine Hungary\u2019s diplomatic credibility. A proud, sovereign European nation must be capable of showing empathy and support for Palestinians who yearn for freedom and their own state, rather than unilaterally aiding in their oppression.<\/p>\n
3. The danger of European and global isolation<\/p>\n
It must be recognized that the Israeli government\u2019s current military strategy and political course are creating serious tensions even within the Western alliance system. Washington and a significant portion of the European Union\u2019s member states are also increasingly demanding the recognition of Palestinian statehood and compliance with international law. If Hungarian policy reflexively and uncritically defends a single actor in international forums, it will once again force Hungary into an isolated, maverick position.<\/p>\n
4. Economic Realism and Global Relations<\/p>\n
Hungary is an open, export-oriented economy for which maintaining good relations with the Arab world and the countries of the Global South is of vital interest. For these countries, the Palestinian cause is sacred and inviolable. Unilateral Israeli commitments could close doors that should remain open for the benefit of the Hungarian economy. A pragmatic foreign policy must seek economic benefit and stability, rather than jumping into trenches chosen on ideological grounds.<\/p>\n

The Tisza Party\u2019s statement proves that the new generation of politicians is falling into the same trap as the old one: foreign policy is driven not by cold, hard Hungarian interests and universal human values, but by a scramble for international recognition.
