After all, Zionism is historically a movement for the Jewish people’s national self-determination and statehood, whereas Christianity is a universal, transnational world religion.

However, if we scratch beneath the surface and examine the theological and geopolitical realities, we will see that this concept is not only not a contradiction, but one of the its most influential and decisive political alliance.

To understand this phenomenon, it is helpful to distinguish between the surface-level logic and the underlying doctrines.

Why does it seem like a contradiction at first glance?

Universalism vs. Particularism: Christianity (based primarily on Pauline theology) teaches that in Christ „There is neither Jew nor Greek”, In other words, salvation is universal; it is not tied to one’s ancestry or geographical location. In contrast, Zionism focuses on a specific geographical location (Zion/Palestine) and a specific people.

Historical anti-Semitism: For centuries, the stigmatization of Judaism (accusations of deicide/blasphemy) and the substitutionary theology (supersessionism). The latter taught that the Church (the „spiritual Israel”) had entirely replaced the Jewish people in God’s plan, and thus the Jewish people no longer had a prophetic role or any claim to the Holy Land.

Why aren't wooden horseshoes actually made of wood?

Modern Christian Zionism—which wields enormous influence particularly within evangelical, Pentecostal, and charismatic movements (such as the Hit Gyülekezete here in Hungary)—is based on a specific interpretation of the Bible, the dispensationalism is being developed. This theology has completely done away with the doctrine of substitution and is based on the following pillars:

1. Two separate alliances

According to Christian Zionists, God has not rejected the Jewish people, and the Abrahamic Covenant (which concerns the eternal possession of the Holy Land) remains alive and valid today. They believe that God has two distinct plans: a spiritual plan for the Church and an earthly, geopolitical plan for Israel. From this perspective, the establishment of Israel in 1948 is not a political coincidence, but the literal fulfillment of biblical prophecies.

2. The Apocalyptic Scenario (Eschatology)

Behind the support for Christian Zionists lies a very specific vision of the future. They believe that the Second Coming of Jesus (the Parousia) and the events of the end times and only may occur if:

The Jewish people are returning to the Holy Land from all over the world (Aliyah).

They will establish and defend the State of Israel.

The Third Temple in Jerusalem is being rebuilt on the Temple Mount (where the al-Aqsa Mosque stands today).

For them, therefore, unconditional political, financial, and military support for Israel will hasten the Messiah’s return.

3. Pragmatic symbiosis

Although the ultimate goals of Jewish Zionists and Christian Zionists differ radically from a theological perspective (according to Christian eschatology, in the end times the Jews must accept Jesus as the Messiah, or else they will be destroyed in the Battle of Armageddon), in the current political landscape this difference is irrelevant.

to Israel It needs weapons, money, the U.S. veto, and international diplomatic protection.

Christian Zionists (especially in the U.S., the so-called Christian Right, (that is, the religious right, which represents tens of millions of voters) provide this political base.

Summary

Christian Zionism, therefore, not a logical somersault, but the transformation of theology into a geopolitical weapon. They do not support Israel because they want to become „Jews,” but because their own Christian religious beliefs and their end-times scenario require Israel’s political and military success.

This is why Hasbara (Israeli government PR) now often receives greater and more vocal support from Christian Zionist organizations (such as the Christians United for Israel – CUFI) than from secular Jewish communities.

Morfológiai és logikai szempontból elsőre valóban úgy tűnhet, hogy a „keresztény cionista” kifejezés egy belső ellentmondás, azaz fából vaskarika.
