Over the past few decades, and particularly by 2026, the identity and activities of the State of Israel have undergone a process in which religion and nationalist politics have become increasingly intertwined. Zionism\u2014which was originally a secular movement striving for national self-determination\u2014has now become a complex web of religiously based arguments, territorial claims, and international diplomacy.<\/p>\n
The Metamorphosis of Zionism: Politics Disguised as Religion<\/p>\n
Although for Tivadar Herzl and the movement\u2019s founders the idea of a Jewish state was conceived within a purely political and cultural framework, in today\u2019s Israeli government religion is no longer merely a source of spiritual guidance. In current coalitions, the label \u201ereligious\u201d also implies a strongly right-wing, nationalist ideology.<\/p>\n
This process led to the emergence of **religious nationalism**, in which faith serves as one of the primary means of achieving state objectives. When policymakers use the biblical terms Judea and Samaria instead of the West Bank, it is not merely a matter of terminology: by doing so, they classify these territories as a \u201edivine inheritance\u201d to which the norms of modern international law do not apply.<\/p>\n
The Tool: Religion as an \u201eAbsolute Argument\u201d<\/p>\n
The instrumentalization of religion has proven to be extremely effective because it elevates political debates to a level where compromise becomes impossible.<\/p>\n
Land acquisition as a sacred mission:<\/p>\n
The settler movement justifies the settlement of these territories by invoking biblical commandments (*mitzvah*). This narrative elevates the \u201enecessary security decision\u201d to a moral obligation, which is difficult to challenge with liberal or democratic arguments.<\/p>\n
Demographic Strategy:<\/p>\n
Increasing the population and retaining territory through support for religious communities is not only a matter of social policy but also a geopolitical tool that ensures the state\u2019s territorial integrity in the face of the international community\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n
The social and diplomatic cost<\/p>\n
However, this strategy is generating serious internal and external tensions. A significant portion of secular Israelis is watching with concern the erosion of democracy and the state\u2019s increasingly strong \u201ereligionization,\u201d which also affects everyday life (marriage, education, military exemptions).<\/p>\n
Seen from the outside, the situation is even more critical: an indirect but real link can be drawn between Israel\u2019s actions and the rise of global anti-Semitism. Since international public opinion often conflates the Israeli government\u2019s decisions with the Jewish people as a whole, political criticism can easily spill over into anti-Semitic hatred. And while the Israeli leadership\u2019s religious-nationalist narrative keeps its domestic voter base cohesive, it isolates the country internationally and undermines the credibility of the discourse on \u201evoluntary emigration\u201d or \u201ehumanitarian aid.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Conclusion: An unsustainable symbiosis?<\/p>\n
The use of religion for political purposes in a modern state leads to a gradual erosion of the willingness to compromise. When a political goal becomes \u201esacred,\u201d dialogue ceases. The question is how long Israel, grappling with the technological and economic challenges of the 21st century, can maintain this religious-nationalist duality before it permanently undermines its internal social unity or its international legitimacy.<\/p>\n
Religion, as a political resource, may provide the government with stability in the short term, but in the long term it creates a Gordian knot that is nearly impossible to untangle using the tools of traditional diplomacy.<\/p>\n
